From spring snowmelt to late-summer flows, each month on the Arkansas River offers a different experience. Here's how to pick your perfect trip.
The Arkansas River near the Royal Gorge offers one of the longest whitewater seasons in Colorado, running from early April through mid-September. But the river changes dramatically throughout the season, and the best time to go depends on what you're looking for.
Early Season: April - Mid May
Water Level: Low to moderate (800-2,000 CFS) Temperature: Cool air, cold water Rapids: Class III in the gorge, Class II in Bighorn Sheep Canyon
The early season offers a quieter experience with smaller crowds. Rapids are gentler at lower flows, making it a great time for nervous first-timers to try the Royal Gorge section. Water is cold: full wetsuits are standard. Air temperatures in the 50s-60s mean layering is important.
Best for: Photographers wanting uncrowded shots, first-timers wanting a slightly mellower Royal Gorge experience
Peak Snowmelt: Late May - June
Water Level: High (3,000-5,000+ CFS) Temperature: Warming air, cold water Rapids: Class IV-V in the gorge, Class III-IV in Bighorn Sheep Canyon
This is when the Arkansas River transforms into serious whitewater. Snowmelt from the Rockies swells the river, and rapids that were Class III in April become solid Class V. The Royal Gorge becomes an expert-only run (ages 16+ required). Bighorn Sheep Canyon pushes to Class III-IV, still doable for adventurous families but more intense.
Best for: Experienced rafters seeking maximum whitewater, adrenaline junkies, bucket-list trips
Prime Season: July
Water Level: Moderate-high (2,000-3,500 CFS) Temperature: Warm air, comfortable water Rapids: Class III-IV in the gorge, Class II-III in Bighorn Sheep Canyon
July is the sweet spot. Water levels remain exciting but are more manageable than June's peak. Air temperatures reach the 80s-90s, and water has warmed considerably. The Royal Gorge runs at solid Class IV: challenging and thrilling without the extreme conditions of peak snowmelt. Bighorn Sheep Canyon is ideal for families.
Best for: Most people: great rapids, warm weather, and the full range of trip options available
Late Season: August - Mid September
Water Level: Moderate (1,500-2,500 CFS) Temperature: Warm air, warmer water Rapids: Class III-IV in the gorge, Class II in Bighorn Sheep Canyon
Thanks to supplemental water releases from Twin Lakes and Turquoise Reservoirs, the Royal Gorge maintains reliable Class IV conditions well into August: unusual for Colorado rivers. This is the most relaxed time to raft: warm weather, comfortable water temps, and smaller crowds as summer winds down.
Best for: Families with younger kids, people who prefer warmer conditions, those wanting to avoid peak-season crowds
How Water Releases Extend the Season
Unlike most Colorado rivers that dry up by August, the Arkansas River benefits from reservoir releases that maintain rafting-quality flows into September. Twin Lakes and Turquoise Reservoirs release stored water, keeping the Royal Gorge runnable long after other rivers have dropped too low. This gives the Royal Gorge one of the longest Class IV seasons anywhere in Colorado.
